Guard grabs split in 3rd Annual Tommy Young Basketball Classic
The Guard played lockdown defense to rout Bullard 41-23 Saturday in their final game of the 3rd Annual Tommy Young Basketball Classic at Herrington Gym.
The victory came 48 hours after Brook Hill was on the wrong end of a 52-44 loss to Laneville in their Classic opener.
The split gives Brook Hill a 4-2 record with the Guard leaving for the 33rd Annual Wylie Lions Club Catclaw Classic.
The Guard are grouped into the Purple Division along with Lamesa, Midland Christian, Lubbock High, Wichita Falls Rider, Fort Worth Chisholm Trail, Monahans, Canyon, Abilene High, Abilene Cooper and Abilene Wylie.
All of the games will take place at Wylie High School’s Bulldog Gym and the action begins Thursday morning with seeding games.
On Saturday, the Guard was still seething from its Laneville loss and vented its frustrations on the visiting Bullard Panthers. Brook Hill led 7-2 at the end of the first period before outscoring the Panthers 15-2 in the second period for a 22-6 halftime lead.
Brook Hill maintained its advantage the rest of the way.
“After a close loss to Laneville, I was pleased to see our guys come out with some fire,” Brook Hill coach Jacob Agnew said. “That can be hard to do in a Saturday afternoon game.
“We got after it and took an early lead and never looked back. We cut our turnovers in half from (the Laneville loss), and with Colton Adams and Ryan Cox having better offensive games, we looked much better.”
Cox and Adams each scored 10 points to lead the Guard with Cox also adding six rebounds and four steals.
Against Laneville, the Guard were in pole position after a strong first half in which Brook Hill outscored the visitors 16-12 in the first period and 10-8 in the second period to lead 26-20 at the break.
Everything changed in the second half with Laneville outscoring the Guard 32-18.
Junior Parker Galbraith and senior McCray Fletcher led the Guard with 18 and 14 points, respectively with Ryan Cox adding seven rebounds in the loss.
“We played really hard and pretty well for most of the game, but we just missed too many quality shots down the stretch,” Agnew said. “Laneville is a really good team and we will use this game as a learning tool to get better.”
Guard Roster: Alec Kitt, McCray Fletcher, Colton Adams, Ryan Cox, Parker Galbraith, Bryant Robinson, Jared Johnson, Mason Cudd, Jacob Yeager, Campbell Fletcher, Reid Hill and Miguel Vega.
