Guard overwhelm Prince of Peace to notch 38-20 Homecoming & Senior Night Win

It was Homecoming and Senior Night all rolled into one and Brook Hill quarterback McCray Fletcher had a night fit for a king.

Fletcher, a senior playing his final home game, passed for 223 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead the Guard past Carrollton Prince of Peace 38-20 Friday at Herrington Stadium. Fletcher was also voted Homecoming King along with Homecoming Queen Madison Hammer.

The Guard played catch-up for most of the first half before taking control. Brook Hill trailed 14-11 after the first quarter before outscoring the visitors 27-6 the rest of the way.

Along with Fletcher, senior receivers Ryan Cox and Seth Brasher each had four catches and a touchdown. Senior Jacob Dumesnil rushed for a touchdown and caught a 39-yard pass.

Brook Hill combined to rush for 158 yards, led by junior Jordon McGowen, who rushed 13 times for 73 yards. He also had a TD catch. Junior receiver Parker Galbraith also led the offense with 7 catches for 55 yards and a score.

Many seniors on defense contributed to shut down Prince of Peace after the initial quarter. Some of those names were Chase Moore, Jacob Day, and Victor Loolo. Also, senior kicker Caleb Chadwell booted a 43-yard field goal in his final home game.

The visitors struck first to lead 8-0 in the opening minutes.

Fletcher had the answer for Brook Hill when the senior connected with junior Jordon McGowen for a 19-yard catch and run touchdown. Trailing 8-6, Brook Hill opted to go for 2 and tie the game up with Fletcher doing the honors with a pass to junior Parker Galbraith.

The visitors retook the lead with a second rushing touchdown, but were unsuccessful on the two-point conversion.

Trailing 14-8, Brook Hill drove down the field before being halted at the 26-yard line. The Guard called on Chadwell and he delivered from 43 yards away to cut the deficit to 14-11 entering the second quarter.

Brook Hill took its first lead of the night early in the second quarter. Fletcher was on target again, this time to Cox for a 6-yard strike. Chadwell’s PAT made the score 18-14.

The visitors jumped in front one more time on their third rushing score, and again missed the 2-point conversion try to leave the score, 20-18.

With time running out in the half, Dumesnil put Brook Hill back in front with a 3-yard run and 24-20 lead at the break.

Brook Hill remained on the front foot in the second half. While the defense blanked the visitors from Carrollton, Fletcher added to his touchdown total with a 12-yard scoring strike to Brasher in the third quarter and 4-yard TD pass to Galbraith in the fourth quarter. Chadwell converted both PATs for the final scoreline.

It was Brook Hill’s first home win of the season. The Guard (3-6, 2-4 in TAPPS Division II District 2) will play their season finale on the road Friday at Tyler All Saints. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Mewbourne Field.
