Guard pass, run at will to grab first district win at Dallas Shelton

The Brook Hill Guard were unstoppable Saturday with senior quarterback McCray Fletcher throwing 6 touchdowns in a 53-20 win over Dallas Shelton.

The victory evened Brook Hill’s TAPPS Division II District 2 record at 1-1 and moved to 2-3 overall.

Fletcher finished with 471 yards with senior receiver Seth Brasher notching 8 catches for 164 yards and 3 TDs. The Guard also rushed for a season-high 220 yards, led by senior Victor Loolo, who carried 8 times for 74 yards.

After being held down by Dallas Christian in its district opener, Brook Hill passed and ran at will against Shelton. The Guard finished with a 690 yards of offense and led 28-0 at the end of the first quarter and 44-13 at halftime.

Fletcher and Brasher did not waste time in putting Brook Hill in front with the senior quarterback and receiver connecting for a 25-yard touchdown a little over two minutes into the contest. Senior kicker Caleb Chadwell converted the extra-point to make it 7-0.

Fletcher and Brasher were just getting started with the two hooking up again, this time for 70-yard touchdown. Another PAT by Chadwell made it 14-0 with 5:33 left in the first quarter.

Fletcher continued to throw long touchdown passes, but found a new target in junior Parker Galbraith. Fletcher hit Galbraith for a 31-yard scoring strike and capped the quarter with a 89-yard TD pass to Galbraith. Two PATs from Chadwell and Brook Hill led 28-0 at the end of the first quarter, its largest lead of the season.

Shelton provided a brief response with a touchdown pass to make it 28-7, but another Fletcher scoring strike — this time to junior Alec Kitt on a 14-yard TD — made it 35-7 with 8:24 remaining in the half.

A field goal by Shelton cut the lead a little to 34-10, but the determined Guard kept churning out yardage on a drive that was finished off by a 1-yard touchdown run from freshmen Carson Ezell. Chadwell’s fifth of the half made it 41-10.

Brook Hill was not finished, driving down the field again in the closing seconds to set up Chadwell for a 32-yard field goal and insurmountable 44-10 halftime advantage.

The Guard took its foot off the gas in the second half, only scoring twice on a 27-yard field goal by Chadwell and 10-yard TD pass from Fletcher to Brasher.

The Guard were led defensively by senior Bryant Robinson (8 tackles, 3 for loss) and sophomore Jordan Christopher (4 tackles, 3 for los). Brook Hill also received a boost on special teams from freshman Kigen Jones with three solo tackles.

The Guard now look to carry their momentum into next week and a home clash against Grace Community. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9 at Herrington Stadium and Allen Field.
