TYLER — Brook Hill erased a seven-point deficit in the final four minutes to defeat Palestine 48-47 Thursday in a consolation game of the Diamond Bracket at the Floyd Wagstaff Holiday Tournament held at Tyler Junior College.

The Guard turned everything around with a late 8-0 run to take the lead and never relinquish it. Palestine attempted a long-range 3-pointer at the buzzer that missed.

“We didn’t shoot the best, but our effort was great,” Guard coach Jacob Agnew said of his team’s play. “The guys did a great job of getting stops down the stretch.”

Bryant Robinson and Colton Adams each finished with 10 points to pace Brook Hill while Parker Galbraith and Ryan Cox each chipped in nine points.

The game turned in Brook Hill’s favor thanks to its defense, and in particular, McCray Fletcher. With the Guard trailing by eight points, Fletcher produced back-to-back steals which led to immediate points the other way for Brook Hill. Robinson helped limit Palestine in the paint and the Guard stayed on the front foot after its 8-0 run to win the game.

The contest was close throughout with Brook Hill and Palestine tied 9-9 after the first period. The Guard led 22-21 at halftime and maintained that one-point cushion entering the fourth period when Palestine jumped ahead. Brook Hill was able to rally back and close out 2015 with a victory.

The victory helped Brook Hill bounce back from a 47-36 semifinal loss Wednesday against Lindale.

In that game, the Guard struggled to find their offense, scoring 12 points in the first three quarters to trail 28-12 before erupting with 24 points in the fourth period. The scoring surge wasn’t enough to catch Lindale, but it did please Agnew.

The Eagles finished 2-1 at the Wagstaff to raise their overall record to 10-8.

“Though we would’ve liked to have won the championship in our bracket, going 2-1 at the TJC Wagstaff is always an achievement.”
