Guard split games Thursday-Friday at UG Tournament

GLADEWATER — Brook Hill split its games at the Union Grove Tournament, taking care of McLeod 51-40 on Thursday before being denied in a one-point loss, 51-50, to Avinger.

On Thursday, the Guard took it to McLeod from the opening tip, outscoring the opposition 22-11 in the first period. Brook Hill led 37-19 at halftime before coasting the rest of the way. Ryan Cox led Brook Hill with 16 points while Parker Galbraith added 12, Josh Gilmore and Brad Lamberth each finished with 13 points.

Brook Hill was on fire from beyond the arc, draining eight 3-pointers in the victory.

On Friday, the game between Brook Hill and perennial Class 1A power Avinger was close throughout.

Avinger held a slim 25-22 halftime lead, but the Guard were able top trim that down to one point entering the fourth period. That would ultimately be the hurdle the Guard could not overcome in a one-point loss.

Alec Kitt paced Brook Hill with 15 points in the loss with Colton Adams also finishing in double figures with 10 points.

Brook Hill (2-1) will finish up play at the Union Grove Tournament on Saturday.
