Guard split series with Tyler All Saints

Brook Hill achieved a split in its two games in two days against Tyler All Saints. The Guard edged the Trojans 5-4 Friday in their first meeting before being stopped Saturday, 4-0.

The end result of the split is Brook Hill (14-8 overall) in fourth place in the TAPPS District 2-4A standings at 8-4. The Guard, however, have two games in hand on first-place All Saints (10-4) and could move into a tie for first if Brook Hill sweeps its final two league games against Tyler Bishop Gorman.

The Guard host Gorman on “Senior Night” at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The rematch against the Crusaders is scheduled for Friday in Tyler.

Guard 5, All Saints 4

Brook Hill pulled of a dramatic three-run comeback in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four runs to defeat All Saints, 5-4.

Mason Smith won the game on the mound for Brook Hill, going all seven innings while allowing four runs on six hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

Parker Clark was the Guard’s hero on this night. Clark finished with a double, triple and three RBIs.

Brook Hill took the early initiative with a run in the bottom of the first inning.

McCray Fletcher reached on an error to lead off and stole second. With one out, Clark was hit by a pitch and Miguel Vega hustled to first for an infield single to load the bases.

Smith worked a 2-0 count and was hit by the next pitch to score Fletcher on the bases-loaded walk.

After All Saints scored single runs in the fourth and fifth and two more in the top of the seventh, thinks looked troublesome for a Guard offense which had been held scoreless since the first.

Josh Jenkins began the seven with a single past second base. He moved to second on a wild pitch and advance to third on a single to center field from Ryan Cox. With one out, Fletcher was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

All Saints was able to get the second out when Clark stepped into the batters box with his team trailing 4-3, the bases loaded and two outs. On an 0-2 pitch, Clark laced a bases-clearing triple to left field to the game, 4-4.

All Saints intentionally walked the next two hitters to load the bases and create a force at any base. None of that mattered two pitches into Tyler Overbeek’s at-bat. Overbeek was hit by a pitch to drive in Clark with the game-winning run.
