Guard splits first two games of TAPPS 4A Regional series

The Brook Hill Guard and Fort Worth Southwest Christian have lit up the scoreboard in the first two games of their TAPPS 4A Regional series. The two foes have combined for 48 runs in two games.

Fort Worth Southwest Christian took Game 1, 10-9, with the Guard answering back on Friday to win 15-14 and force a deciding Game 3 on Saturday in Sunnyvale.

That matchup is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Sunnyvale High School.

To the winner, a trip to Houston and the TAPPS state tournament.

Game 1: Southwest Christian 10, Brook Hill 9

The Guard were unable to hold back Southwest Christian in Game 1 of their best-of-three series Wednesday in Fort Worth. Brook Hill held leads of 6-2 and 9-8, but walks and errors stopped the Guard.

Brook Hill committed three errors and issued eight walks — one of those scored the tying run in the fifth inning and another led to Southwest Christian’s winning run on a steal of home in the bottom of the sixth.

Mason Smith started the game and went 3 and 1/3 innings, allowing eight runs — only four of them earned — on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts. He was followed by Logan Langford, Ryan Cox and Miguel Vega who combined to give up single runs in the fifth and sixth on six walks with two hits.

Smith helped himself at the plate, going 2 for 4 with three RBIs while McCray Fletcher and Cox also had two hits in the loss.

The Guard grabbed a 4-2 lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI double by Josh Jenkins which scored Seth Brasher, an RBI groundout by Moore scored Logan Langford and a two-run double by McCray Fletcher that scored Tyler Overbeek and Ryan Cox.

Brook Hill made it 5-2 in the third on an RBI single from Brasher that scored Parker Clark and 6-2 in the fourth on an RBI double by Clark that scored McCray Fletcher.

When the Guard came up to bat in the fifth inning, they now trailed 8-6, but took the lead back, 9-8, with three more runs on a two-out bases-clearing double by Smith that scored Reid Hill, Chase Moore and Cox.

Southwest rallied again to win the game.

Game 2: Guard 15, Southwest Christian 14

In a back-and-forth affair in which Brook Hill led  9-1 in the second inning, it was Seth Brasher scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Ryan Cox for the eventual 15-14 victory Friday at Herrington Field.

Brook Hill accumulated 18 hits in the contest with McCray Fletcher, Mason Smith, Parker Clark, Brasher, Josh Jenkins and Cox all finishing with two or more. The Guard also had six doubles and a home run to help their cause.

It all added up to a season-saving win and chance to play for a state tournament berth on Saturday.

The run-scoring rampage began innocuously enough in the first inning with Miguel Vega lifting a sacrifice fly to score Mason Smith.

Brook Hill then scored eight runs in the second inning. Reid Hill drove in Josh Jenkins, who had doubled, with a bases-loaded walk for a 2-1 lead. Fletcher scored Cox with an RBI single followed by a two-run doubles from Smith and Clark to make it 7-1. The Guard batted around with Jenkins capping the scoring with a two-run home run that scored Clark for a 9-1 lead.

The Guard’s lead had been trimmed to 9-6 in the fourth inning when Tyler Overbeek gave Brook Hill a little breathing room with an RBI single that scored Campbell Fletcher.

Brook Hill then looked to be home and dry with three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Brasher singled home Clark and Cox smacked a two-run double to score Brasher and Vega for a 13-7 advantage.

Southwest Christian did not give up the fight and tied the game 13-13 in the top of the sixth, only for Brook Hill to take the lead again 14-13 on an RBI single from Smith that scored Campbell Fletcher.

The game was tied again 14-14 in the bottom of the seventh, but Brook Hill had one final response. Brasher doubled with one out, and following an intentional walk by Southwest to Jenkins to create a double-play possibility, Cox laced a single to center field that scored Brasher for the game-winning run.
