Varsity boys hoops come up short at Prince of Peace, 56-50

CARROLLTON — Reid Hill scored 23 points and Brook Hill had several chances in the final seconds to tie or win at Prince of Peace, but ultimately fell short, 56-50.

Hill did his damage from three-point range, finishing with seven treys. All told, Brook Hill made 12 3-pointers in the loss. Adams connected on three from long distance to also finish in double figures with 11.

Brook Hill trailed 28-21 at halftime, but had trimmed that deficit to just three points, 42-39, entering the fourth quarter.

“As a coach all you want in a game is to have a chance in the fourth quarter and we gave ourselves plenty,” Coach Jacob Agnew said. “Unfortunately we just couldn’t capitalize.”

Agnew said the Guard was playing shorthanded without the scoring and rebounding presence of Ryan Cox because of an ejection he received a few days earlier in a loss to Dallas Christian.

“I was really proud of the guys and how they fought through the adversity,” Coach Agnew said.

It was the second tough loss of last week after falling to Dallas Christian, 59-43. The Guard trailed by nine points after the first quarter, but were able to rally back and take a one-point lead, 25-24, at halftime.

A sluggish third quarter proved too much with the Guard outscored 19-6. Things turned from bad to worse in the fourth quarter when Ryan Cox was ejected for a flagrant foul that Coach Agnew deemed “questionable.”

“We got a little rattled when they went on a bit of a run (in the third quarter) and just couldn’t get it back to a single-possession game,” Coach Agnew said. “I don’t think there is any doubt in our kids’ minds that if we play our game that we could finish with a different outcome.”

The two league setbacks dropped Brook Hill to  11-10 and 0-2 in TAPPS District 2-4A.
