Guard win on road at Legacy Christian, qualify for playoffs

FRISCO — Brook Hill began the TAPPS 2-4A district tournament with a clear mission — win the first game and then see how things turn out after that.

Mission accomplished.

The Guard raced past Frisco Legacy Christian on Tuesday 59-47 to reach the semifinals of the 2-4A tournament. More importantly, being a semifinalist automatically gains Brook Hill entrance into the TAPPS 4A playoffs.

“I can’t tell you how proud I am of the boys. They came in and executed the game plan to near perfection. I was really proud that we won every quarter, which shows me they didn’t let up for a minute.” — Coach Jacob Agnew

The Guard (15-13) will next meet Dallas Christian (20-11) at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the semifinals at Dallas Christian School. DC defeated Tyler Grace Community 69-36 in its opening-round game.

The Guard built an 13-8 lead over Legacy Christian at the end of the first period and stayed in control throughout. Alec Kitt and McCray Fletcher led the way with 12 points apiece.

Brook Hill led 24-16 at halftime but the home side began pressing the Guard and threatened to pull itself back into the contest in the third period.

Their lead trimmed to three points, 29-26, late in the third quarter, The Guard provided an emphatic final few minutes thanks to their only two 3-pointers of the game.

Brook Hill beat Legacy Christian’s press and Reid Hill was left open from long distance. That gave the Guard a 6-point lead, but Brook Hill was not finished. A defensive stop led to Parker Galbraith locating Colton Adams, who let loose from the corner at the buzzer that was good for a 35-26 advantage entering the final frame.

“From that point, we had all the momentum,” Agnew said. “We closed it out with clutch free throws down the stretch.”
