Guard win thriller on road at Tenaha, 33-32

TENAHA — Junior Jordon McGowen powered into the end zone with two seconds remaining and Calab Chadwell booted the extra point to give Brook Hill a thrilling 33-32 come-from-behind win over Tenaha Friday night.

The Guard trailed 27-19 entering the fourth quarter before rallying to notch their first victory. Brook Hill is now 1-1 on the season.

Chadwell was perfect on his extra points and a 19-yard field goal. It was an extra-point block by Brook Hill that would prove to be important to the final result.

Brook Hill struck first with senior quarterback McCray Fletcher connecting with senior receiver Seth Brasher for a 27-yard touchdown. Chadwell’s PAT made it 7-0 in the opening minutes.

Tenaha answered with a 60-yard touchdown on a shovel pass, but the attempt to tie on the extra point, the Guard surged and blocked it with senior Victor Loolo scooping it up and returning it the other way 90 yards 2-point conversion.

That gave Brook Hill a 9-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Guard and Fletcher went to work in the second quarter for another touchdown. This time Fletcher found senior receiver Jacob Dumesnil for a 14-yard touchdown. Chadwell’s PAT pushed Brook Hill to a 16-6 advantage with 9:19 remaining in the half.

Tenaha answered back with a touchdown, but Brook Hill had one more scoring drive in its arsenal before halftime with Chadwell’s 19-yard field goal giving the Guard a 19-13 lead at the half.

Tenaha owned the third quarter, scoring twice to now lead Brook Hill 27-19.

Both teams would find the end zone in the final quarter, but it was McGowen who delivered the final verdict. McGowen finished off a Brook Hill drive with a 2-yard TD run to help the Guard cut their deficit to 33-26 following Chadwell’s PAT with 2:27 left.

The Guard defense held Tenaha and got the ball back. On the road and in search of their first win of the season, Brook Hill turned to McGowen, who got into the end zone from a yard out with two seconds remaining to tie the game, 32-32.

All that was left was Chadwell’s extra point and the senior made no mistake.

Brook Hill (1-1) faces another tough test against Alto (2-0) on Friday.
