Lady Guard Middle School teams reach championship game at Edgewood Tournament

EDGEWOOD — Brook Hill Middle School volleyball traveled to Edgewood on Saturday to compete in a tournament and returned with runner-up trophies after two strong showings against larger UIL schools.

The Lady Guard 8th Grade 8 team began by defeating Mabank in two games (25-22, 25-13) and host Edgewood in three games (28-26, 23-25, 25-16).

The two victories vaulted BHMS 8th A into the championship game in their bracket against Fruitvale. The Lady Guard grabbed Game 1 against Fruitvale, but dropped the next two finish second overall, 18-25, 25-16, 25-23.

Leaders for 8th A in their run to the championship game were Mary Roberts (12 kills, 5 aces), Emily Livesay (3 kills, 8 aces), Morgan Maddox (2 kills), Neeley Clark (2 kills), Nia Carter (1 ace), McKenna Lovelady (1 ace) and Mattison’s two digs.

While 8th A was enjoying success, BHMS 7th A was forging its own path by defeating Mabank (25-16, 25-19) before falling short to Edgewood to drop into the consolation championship against Scurry-Rosser.

BHMS 7th A was stopped in two games by Scurry-Rosser, 25-15, 25-13 to bring back a consolation runner-up plaque.

Leaders for BHMS 7th A were Marlee Gunter (2 kills, 4 aces), Emma Lambert (1 kill, 2 aces), Grace Carpenter (2 kills, 1 ace), Bethany Durrett (2 kills), Emily Gragg (2 assists), Allyson Juarez (1 kill, 1 ace) and Sarah Sims (6 aces).
