Lady Guard MS splits with Bishop Gorman

Both schools shared the spoils Monday evening in a volleyball quadruple-header between Bishop Gorman and Brook Hill Middle School.

The Lady Guard’s 8th Grade A and 7th Grade B teams won with Brook Hill dropping the *th B and 7th A matches.

Leading the way was the 8th Grade A team which swept Bishop Gorman, 25-10, 25-12. Strong serving by Mary Roberts, Emily Livesay and Mattison O’Neal was the difference as the three Lady Guard players combined for 14 aces in the two games. It was part of 17 aces overall in the match.

“This team made some incredible hustle plays,” Brook Hill coach Candise Wise said. “They never let the ball hit the floor.”

Livesay finished with five assists, four aces and one kill with Roberts delivering seven aces, four kills and one assist. Rounding out the Lady Guard leaders were O’Neal (three aces), Neeley Clark (two kills), Morgan Maddox (one ace, one assist) and McKenna Lovelady (two aces).

The 7th Grade B team win was powered by strong serving from Callie Bailey, who was responsible for 29 points off her serve in a 25-14, 25-22 victory.

The 8th Grade B team overcame a cold start to bounce back from an opening-game loss and win Game 2 to force a third deciding game, but couldn’t complete the comeback in a 25-6, 16-25, 15-8 loss.

Said Coach Wise: “The team fought back in the second game after gaining confidence and played hard until the last whistle was blown.”

In another three-game loss, the 7th Grade A team “played very hard as a team” according to Wise, but fell short, 22-25, 27-25, 15-9

The 8th Grade and 7th Grade A teams are back in action this weekend at the Edgewood Tournament.
