Lady Guard softball grabs victories at TASO tournament

WHITEHOUSE — Brook Hill competed at the TASO tournament last week in Whitehouse, playing five games in three days. The Lady Guard finished with two wins, two losses and a tie.

The Lady Guard captured wins over Athens (6-5) and Harmony (6-3) with losses against Van (6-4) and Brownsboro (11-2). Brook Hill capped it by battling for a 3-3 tie against Hemphill.

This left Brook Hill with a 2-2-1 record for the week.

The Guard Middle School softball team also grabbed a victory with a 19-2 win over Plano Prestonwood.

Lady Guard 6, Harmony 3

Taylor Schultz had a solo home run and RBI double to lead Brook Hill past Harmony.

Brook Hill gave up two runs in the top of the first before responding with authority in the bottom of the inning. Maddie Anthony and Maddie Parker reached base and both came home on a two-run single from AD Kuechle.

That tied the game at 2-2, but the Lady Guard weren’t finished. Schultz and Alyssa Duplichain blasted solo home runs to make it 4-2. Harmony pulled within a run, 4-3, in the top of the third, but that was all. Meanwhile, Schultz smacked a RBI double as part of a two-run bottom of thee third to help seal the victory.

Duplichain struck out two and allowed two earned runs with one walk on first hits in her five innings to get the victory.

Lady Guard 6, Athens 5

Brook Hill rallied from three runs down in its final at-bat to defeat Athens 6-5. The Lady Guard took advantage of five Athens errors in the comeback and some timely hitting.

Brook Hill jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, taking advantage of Athens miscues and using a double from Maddie Parker.

Athens tied the game in the bottom of the first and went front 5-2 in the third inning.

Facing their final three outs because of tournament time limits, Brook Hill had to complete its comeback in the fifth inning.

More Athens errors were seized upon by Brook Hill, which scored four runs. Parker drove in two of the runs with her second double of the game and A.D. Kuechle singled home Parker and scored the eventual winning run on an error.

Alyssa Duplichain got the win in the circle, allowing four earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.
