Softball: Lady Guard rout Tyler Grace to win league opener

TYLER — Brook Hill used a 12-run third inning to crush Tyler Grace Community 18-0 in three innings Tuesday in their TAPPS Division II District 3 opener. The game was called after the third inning because of a the 15-run rule.

It was more than enough run support for the Lady Guard’s Kasey Anderson, who delivered three no-hit innings to get the win. Anderson finished with two walks and seven strikeouts. She also stole home plate twice as part of her three runs scored with three RBIs.

Maddie Anthony doubled, tripled and scored four runs for Brook Hill, which raised its overall record to 12-7 while now also beginning league play at 1-0. Not to be outdone, Alyssa Duplichain stole home twice as well, going 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs.

Brook Hill scored three runs in the top of the first. Anthony led off the game with a triple over the center-fielder’s head. Anderson then bunted and reached on an error, which scored Anthony. Alyssa Duplichain was hit by a pitch and Kyndel Clayton walked to load the bases for Kaitlyn Juarez. While her at-bat was happening, Anderson took matters in to her own hands and successfully stole home plate with Duplichain moving up to third. Duplichain decided to follow suit and also stole home plate during Jaurez’s at-bat to give Brook Hill a 3-0 lead.

The Lady Guard doubled their lead with three more runs in the second inning. Natalie Travis led off with a single and went to second one Anthony was plunked with one out. Travis then raced home on an RBI single from Anderson to give Brook Hill a 4-0 lead. Duplichain followed with an RBI single of her own to score Anthony. Anderson eventually stole home to increase the Lady Guard lead to 6-0.

Brook Hill exploded in the third inning. The Lady Guard sent 17 batters to the plate, who combined for five hits, four walks and four hit-by-pitch.

Kaitlynn Rhea walked to lead off and eventually stole home with Vanna Dean driving in Natalie Travis with an RBI single and 8-0 lead. Maddie Anthony doubled in Dean with the parade of Brook Hill batters continuing.

After Anthony came home on an error, Duplichain singled and A.D. Kuechle walked to load the bases. Kyndel Clayton drove in Anderson by being hit by a pitch. Heather McLary was brought in to pinch hit and she immediately delivered a two-run single.

With nine runs on the board in the third, Travis finally recorded Brook Hill’s first out, but her ground ball also drove in the Lady Guard’s 15th run. More runs scored on walks and/or errors with Kuechle playing the 18th and final tally on an RBI single to center field.

Anderson allowed a two-out walk in the bottom of the third, but that was all to end the game.
