This week 5th graders wrote their own experiment to test for the best paper towels in science class. Some tested absorbency while others tested strength. What great practice for writing experiments to prepare our students for writing their own plans for the science fair!
The physics class’s goal was to build a capsule that will render the egg unbreakable. This lab explores impulse and momentum. Two groups successfully provided a safe landing for their egg while one resulted in a more “scrambled” fashion!
Today our Lower School got pumped up for homecoming with a full on pep rally! We had the drum line, cheer and dance routines, and our students’ showed some Brook Hill Spirit!
[wpvideo LiEVpjbJ] Third through Fifth grade Spanish students memorized the verse Proverbs 3:5 in Spanish. The students enjoyed saying the verse individually and also as a whole class. One of the third grade students from this class even said it backwards. “Confía en el Señor de todo corazón y no en tu propia inteligencia.” Proverbios 3.5 […]
After joyfully singing several songs, students, staff, and parents in the Lower School Chapel service learned that the answers to life’s problems can found in the Bible. This was cleverly explained in a skit led by Mrs. Savage’s class. Individuals with problems called the Bible store, “Cover 2 Cover” for advice. Appropriate verses were then shipped out to help these individuals.
In our Lower School Science Lab, 5th graders tested for the presence of starch in different foods. This lab reinforced a lesson on photosynthesis and showed the real-life effects of the process. Students learned that plants store extra glucose in the form of starch. What a unique way to interact with scientific principles in the […]
Tuesday night Mr. Fletcher (Headmaster) and his family invited our boarding community into their home for an Ice Cream Social. Our students played games, socialized, and, of course, created and consumed their own ice cream creation. With activities, 3 flavors of ice cream, 7 toppings, and 65 students we had the recipe for an enjoyable evening.
Our 5th grade students viewed plant cells under the microscope in science lab this week! Onions, tomatoes and lettuce were among the cells observed under the microscope. What a unique opportunity for our students to see the relevance of science with their own eyes and to notice the differences at the cellular level of food […]
Inspired by the story, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, by Judy Blume, students in Mrs. Ponce’s class recently held a contest to determine which flavor would be the favorite of Brook Hill third-fifth graders. Mrs. Ponce’s class worked in teams to create posters and commercials for their juice flavor concoctions which included a secret ingredient. Students […]
On Thursday, October 3, a group of 37 US students spent their school day at the new girls boarding house, learning about leadership. The event used the large common room at the boarding house as a meeting space, and students learned about their spiritual gifts, the importance of influence, how to identify priorities, and how […]
To help our 5th grade students understand scientific concepts about plants, Mrs. Wallace devised a mystery case the students needed to use leaves to solve. As the story goes, a robber had escaped and the only evidence police had on the suspects were leaves stuck to the trucks’ tires. In order to solve the case […]
